Q:  Did McLuhan have artistic genius?

A:  Well he was a lousy wine taster. I don’t think his 
taste in painting was all that great. I think he had 
an extraordinary sense of poetry and language. He 
had language like the best poet and the best 
philosopher put together. And that was his art, I 
think.
 
And I made the mistake of two or three times 
bringing him a bottle. And finding that he would 
taste it the same as the ordinary Canadian beer. 
So I didn’t do it anymore. And in music—oh, you 
know, I don’t think he had an exceptional music
